Mahindra Scorpio Classic: Sheer ruggedness, reliability and road presence have made the Mahindra Scorpio Classic one of the best-loved and respected SUVs in India.
Although Mahindra has moved the trail ahead with the Scorpio-N, it appeared to be a good move on part of the company to have not just axed the sing old Scorpio off, but to let it live on, in a facelifted version that is called the Scorpio Classic.
It’s a midsize SUV with the attributes that made the original 4-Runner famous, appealing to people that prioritize ruggedness, good road manners and an old-fashioned ambiance over creature comforts and fancy electronic interfaces.
With its robust SUV, body-on-frame build, powerful stance and go-anywhere capability, the Scorpio Classic continues to be in a league of its own and continues to draw rural customers, government officials and those seeking a tough vehicle that has no pretentions of being something it’s not.
Tough and Familiar Design
The Scorpio, the ‘beast kind automobile’ from the Mahindra stable has well embraced the boxy guise and it has been significantly conspicuous in India.
But the new model has a handful of aesthetic differences to bring it into line with the 21st century, without losing that retro feel.
It will now receive a new front grille with Mahindra’s latest twin-peaks logo, updated LED day-time running lights (DRLs), and new bumper design.
The sides still come with strong character lines, flared wheel arches and roof rails that further reinforce its robust character.
The alloy wheels have also been updated – while the rear end of the car sees new tail lamps with a cleaner design than what we have currently.
Those may not be future looking, but the Scorpio Classic has presence – raw and unapologetic.
Rugged with Touches
Open the door, and the cabin speaks to the tale of function over flash. The layout is basic but Mahindra has refreshed the cabin with dual-tone themes, improved materials and a new 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system.
The equipment list is not a high-tech extravaganza, but the basics are covered – AC, power windows, steering-mounted controls and some audio support that isn’t bad.
Seats are wide and supportive in the attempt to stave off fatigue from long hours of pounding.
The high driving position not only works well in traffic, providing a commanding view of the road ahead, but it also makes the X1 feel more like a proper SUV than a car-based soft-roader.
Space is generous for five to seven people depending on the version, but the third row is more suitable for short trips or children.
Proven Diesel Powertrain
Mechanically, the new Mahindra Scorpio Classic gets the tried and tested 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine tuned for 130 bhp and 300 Nm of torque.
It’s paired to a 6-speed manual transmission. This configuration has ample legs for the highway, mountain grades and off-road.
The one thing that differentiates the Scorpio Classic from them is its hardy old body-on-frame frame, something that makes it equally sturdy and rugged on the potholed rural roads or in the construction site.
Low and mid-range power delivery is strong so ideal for overtakes and loaded drives.
It’s not the silkiest or quietest engine, but it offers power where it counts.
Ride, Handling, and Utility
With the Scorpio Classic being a tall, ladder frame-based off-roader, it’s not like it’s supposed to be carving up corners.
Even so, it’s great at soaking up potholes, bumps and dirt trails. The suspension has been re-calibrated for better ride comfort, particularly for the rear-seat passengers.
The steering feel is good, albeit on the heavier side at lower speeds, while body roll becomes apparent on tight turns.
With its raised ground clearance, robust suspension and solid underbody, the SUV is tailor made for semi-urban, rural and off-tarmac application.
No matter the trail, uneven path or slushy slope, the Classic will glide along effortlessly.
